A new application for facial recognition technology has been found in China. It will now be used to identify pandas.
Giant pandas can be visually identified, but their uniform black-and-white coloring makes them indistinguishable to the human eye.
But not for artificial intelligence. Chinese researchers have developed an AI-based facial recognition application that can identify specific pandas.
Visitors to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in southwestern China will soon be able to use the app to identify any of the dozens of giant pandas living in captivity, as well as obtain additional information about them.
The creators of the application also believe that it will help scientists track bears in their natural habitat.
"The app and database will help us collect more accurate and comprehensive data on the population, distribution, age, sex ratio, birth, and death of wild pandas living in mountainous areas that are difficult to track," said researcher Chen Peng, co-author of the article "Recognizing Giant Panda Faces Using a Small Database."
