According to Tom's Hardware, construction of China's first commercial underwater data center, UDC Hainan, is ongoing. The data center is located off the coast of Sanya (Hainan Island). The companies involved in the project installed the first module in April, and last Friday, the Highlander team (HiCloud Data Center Technology) submerged another block into the sea. This is not the only underwater data center in China; several others are being built in the Yangtze and Pearl River deltas. The module, weighing about 1300 tons, is being installed at a depth of 35 meters — it takes three hours just to reach the bottom. It is expected that the structure can operate for 25 years, maintaining resilience against natural disasters. Detailed technical specifications are not disclosed, but it is said that each module can process 4 million HD images in 30 seconds — approximately the same amount that 60,000 standard computers could handle.
