Microsoft continues to enhance the Edge browser. While having the Chromium rendering engine ensures speed, it doesn't automatically make the browser the best by default. Consequently, developers are starting to copy interesting features from others. One notable feature is the customizable tabs from the Vivaldi browser.
Unlike most of its competitors, Vivaldi offers an abundance of settings that allow users to change tab positions, their behavior, and much more. It also includes support for thumbnails on hover, the ability to set a minimum width for the active tab, unread message indicators, and plenty of other options.
Of course, all of these features are hardwired into the browser; however, it's important to note that nearly all of them can also be implemented through extensions. The new Microsoft Edge will work with all Google Chrome extensions, and furthermore, Microsoft will create and support its own extension store. In other words, it all depends on the plugin authors. Theoretically, Microsoft Edge could be turned into a similar 'machine' as Chrome. However, it wouldn't be surprising if the company integrates such features directly into the program's code.
As for the release timeline, the company is keeping it under wraps for now, but insiders expect that in the coming weeks, Microsoft will approve the release of a preliminary build. You can also download an unofficial early build that has leaked online.
It is worth noting that this approach is expected to help the company improve the popularity of its proprietary browser among users, move it to other operating systems, and even capture some market share from Google. At least, that's theoretically possible.
