Mozilla Thunderbird is anticipating a major update that will introduce built-in email encryption using OpenPGP. Now, you can say goodbye to add-ons like Enigmail and Mailvelope. The encryption implementation is based on the work of the Enigmail add-on, whose author is assisting the Mozilla team in transferring this functionality to the email client.
The main difference will be that instead of using the external GnuPG program, its own implementation of the OpenPGP library is proposed.
A proprietary key storage will also be introduced, which is incompatible with GnuPG key file formats and is protected by a master password, used for safeguarding accounts and S/MIME keys.
