OpenSUSE Tumbleweed introduces support for the systemd-boot loader as an alternative to GNU GRUB (currently as an option). According to the developers' official version, switching to Systemd-Boot will enhance boot speed and improve the security of the boot process. The developers also expect that the transition to systemd-boot will simplify and increase the efficiency of full disk encryption and streamline operations with snapshots in the Btrfs file system.
It should be noted that systemd-boot does not support the Master Boot Record. If systemd-boot becomes the only boot option in the future, it will be impossible to run OpenSUSE on older PCs without a UEFI emulator like Clover.
