The openSUSE developers have announced the discontinuation of the BCacheFS filesystem in Linux kernel packages. The reason cited is the assignment of this filesystem to external maintenance status in the main kernel, implying the cessation of changes for Bcachefs in the main kernel while retaining this filesystem in the kernel codebase. The openSUSE developers do not intend to backport patches from the BCacheFS project kernel branch into their distributive package.
The discontinuation will take place in kernel packages starting from version 6.17, in which the status of BCacheFS has changed. Support will be maintained in kernel packages 6.16. For those who need BCacheFS, it is recommended to use the instructions for rebuilding a kernel variant with patches from the BCacheFS developers. When the status of BCacheFS changes in the main kernel, support for this filesystem will be resumed in openSUSE.
