The developers of the Palemoon browser plan to increase CPU requirements in the upcoming builds. The reason given is the desire to utilize AVX processor instructions to significantly speed up browser performance. This change is scheduled for summer 2024.
To use the new builds, a processor that supports the second version of the x86-64 microarchitecture (x86_64-v2) will be required, which has been used in processors since around 2009, starting with AMD FX and the first generation of Intel Core i7 (Nehalem). The x86_64-v2 microarchitecture features extensions such as SSE3, SSE4_2, SSSE3, POPCNT, LAHF-SAHF, and CMPXCHG16B. For users with older processors, it is suggested to use the 32-bit build for Windows, utilize packages from Linux distributions, or compile it independently.
It is also worth noting reports that, over the past week, Palemoon browser users have been encountering crashes while passing through Cloudflare's DDoS protection. At one point, the issue was resolved, but it reemerged at the end of the week.
