Next month, Intel is expected to release the next-generation HEDT processors, Cascade Lake-X. Reviews for these new products will also be published in November; however, Lab501 decided not to wait for the set dates and released the results of its own tests of the flagship Core i9-10980XE processor.
To begin with, it’s worth noting that the Core i9-10980XE processor features 18 cores and 36 threads, just like its predecessor, the Core i9-9980XE. The new model boasts a higher clock speed: a base of 3.0 GHz, while the maximum in turbo mode reaches 4.8 GHz. Additionally, the new processor offers 48 PCIe lanes compared to 44 in its predecessors. Most importantly, the new Core i9-10980XE is priced at $1000—nearly half the cost of its predecessor.
Regarding the testing results of the new model, they appear somewhat ambiguous. The issue is that in some tests, the Core i9-10980XE underperforms compared to its predecessor. For instance, in Cinebench R20, last year's Core i9-9980XE scores an average of about 8800 points, while the new model only achieved 8563 points. A regression is also observed in the FireStrike Extreme test. This may be related to the fact that colleagues from Lab501 tested a late engineering sample instead of the final version of the processor. Still, such results are concerning.
