It has come to light that a bug has been found in Android 9 (Pie) and Android 10, causing users issues with unlocking their devices. Users of Pixel, Sony, and OnePlus smartphones who use a PIN code for device protection may face specific difficulties.
The problem manifests as follows: the user enters a PIN code to access the device, after which the screen briefly goes dark, and upon turning back on, it remains locked. This issue was first reported a few months ago, but at that time it was not widespread, with only isolated cases being documented.
Despite the issue not being resolved, specialists were able to identify the cause. The unlocking error occurs during the password verification process. After the user inputs the password, the system checks it against the data stored in memory but cannot access the decryption key, returning a 'null' result that triggers the failure.
Currently, there are reports of this problem affecting owners of various Pixel smartphone models, as well as the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact and OnePlus 7 Pro. It is likely that the problem is more widespread, as different smartphones continue to receive platform updates to Android 10.
To avoid issues with unlocking, users of the mentioned smartphones are temporarily advised to use other available means of protecting their devices from unauthorized access. Developers from Google have already been notified of this issue. It is likely that they will release a fix soon to resolve the unlocking bug affecting Android smartphones.
