On March 5th, the developers postmarketOS, a Linux distribution for smartphones based on Alpine Linux, announced the addition of support for the system manager systemd instead of the previously used OpenRC.
Support for the old initialization system will be maintained at least as long as it is in use in the original Alpine Linux. Additionally, when building images, the option to choose the initialization system has been added.
The reason for this transition is the increasing complexity of supporting OpenRC due to the growing dependency of KDE and GNOME on systemd components. Previously, various additional layers had to be used for these purposes.
