The developers of the Servo browser engine, written in Rust, have published a report outlining the latest achievements of the project. Notable updates include the addition of tab support, the implementation of a new tab page, enhanced tools for web developers, and a redesign of the toolbar in the prototype web browser Servo-the-browser, developed on the Servo platform. By default, Servo includes support for WebXR and Flexbox, enables playback of WAV audio files, and has revamped the WebXR API implementation. The JavaScript engine SpiderMonkey 128 and components WebRender 0.65 and wgpu 22.0 used in Servo have been updated.
The Servo project was initially developed by Mozilla but later came under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation. The engine is distinguished by its support for multithreaded rendering of web pages, parallelization of DOM (Document Object Model) operations, and the use of Rust's safe programming mechanisms. Servo was originally created with support for breaking down DOM code and rendering into smaller subtasks that can be executed in parallel, allowing for more efficient use of multicore CPU resources. Some parts of Servo, such as the multithreaded CSS engine and the WebRender rendering system, have already been integrated into Firefox.
