The committee overseeing the development of the GCC compiler suite (GCC Steering Committee) has approved the inclusion of the gcc-a68 frontend into the GCC codebase to support the Algol 68 programming language, developed in the late 1960s. After the integration of this frontend, the standard GCC toolchain will be able to compile programs written in Algol 68 without the need to install the GNU Algol 68 compiler. The frontend will be available in an experimental mode in GCC 16, scheduled for release next spring.
The Algol 68 frontend has been added with some caveats: it will not be included in default builds and will not count towards the evaluation of GCC's readiness for release. Additionally, developers not responsible for the Algol 68 frontend's development will have the option to decline work on issues related to this frontend. In case of maintenance problems, the frontend will be removed.
Currently, GCC includes frontends for the C, C++, Objective C, Objective C++, Fortran, Ada, Go, D, Modula-2, Rust, and Cobol languages. There are also separate developments for frontends of GNU Pascal Compiler (GPC), Mercury, Modula-3, GHDL (VHDL), PL/1, and GCC Unified Parallel C (GCC UPC).
