The wayland-protocols set has added the tearing-control extension, which enhances the basic Wayland protocol by allowing the disabling of vertical synchronization (VSync) in fullscreen applications with a frame-killing pulse, used to prevent screen tearing. In multimedia applications, artifacts from tearing are an undesirable effect, but in gaming applications, some artifacts can be tolerated if combating them results in additional delays. Implementations of the extension that enable minimal output delays in games on Wayland-based environments have been prepared for Kwin, Gamescope, and Mesa.
