On the eve of the new year, Respawn Entertainment co-founder Vince Zampella seems to have received some kind of promotion within the broader structure of Electronic Arts' studio. The Los Angeles Times reported that he will now head the DICE studio division in Los Angeles, known for its work on franchises like Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront.
In the past, DICE LA primarily served as a studio that assisted the main team in Stockholm with its larger projects. Now, under Mr. Zampella's leadership, the developer will start independently creating games. However, currently, information about what the first project of the studio might be is not disclosed.
Vince Zampella also stated that DICE LA is likely to undergo rebranding in the future to more clearly separate the studio from DICE: "We want to give it a new image. We want people to say, 'This is the place to go to create new content.' I think this team has gained a reputation as the support studio for DICE Stockholm. I believe rebranding is important to tell developers: 'Hey! Come work here. We're going to create amazing things.'
However, Mr. Zampella's new position does not mean that his work at Respawn is over. The leader explained that he will still play a significant role in helping Respawn, but now that the studio has a more stable infrastructure, the volume of daily work in the company has slightly decreased. Currently, Stig Asmussen leads the team within Respawn Entertainment responsible for , Chad Grenier oversees , and Peter Hirschmann heads Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.
The reshuffle at DICE LA is certainly an interesting move by EA that we hope will benefit the publisher in the long term. Considering the number of Electronic Arts studios that have closed in recent years, it seems the company needs to start building a few new teams. Given Mr. Zampella's past achievements, there is hope that DICE LA will delight the audience with more than one good game in the future.
