Canonical has announced a 15-year update cycle for LTS releases of Ubuntu. The extension will apply to all current LTS releases, starting with Ubuntu 14.04. This means that support for Ubuntu 14.04 has been extended until April 2029, updates for Ubuntu 24.04 will be available until 2039, Ubuntu 22.04 until 2037, Ubuntu 20.04 until 2035, and so on. Public updates will continue to be released for 5 years after the initial release, while the remaining 10 years of fixes will be available only to users of the Ubuntu Pro service.
The Ubuntu Pro service is paid for commercial use. For personal use, there is an option for free access to Ubuntu Pro for extended updates for 5 machines. Official members of the Ubuntu Community can receive extended updates for 50 machines at no cost.
Regarding other distributions, a 14-year support term is provided for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (10 years + 4 years of additional paid service), SUSE Linux has 16 years of support, Debian GNU/Linux is supported for 10 years (5 years LTS + 5 years Extended LTS), openSUSE is supported for 2 years, and Fedora Linux for 13 months.
