The second installer candidate for the upcoming major Debian release - "Bullseye" has been published. Currently, there are 155 critical release-blocking bugs (185 a month ago, 240 two months ago, 472 four months ago, at the freeze moment in Debian 10 - 316, Debian 9 - 275, Debian 8 - 350, Debian 7 - 650).
At the same time, the date for the complete freeze of the Debian 11 "Bullseye" package repository, directly preceding the release, has been announced. On July 17, any changes to packages will be blocked and will require approval from the release formation team. The release is expected in the second half of summer 2021.
Key changes in the installer compared to the first release candidate include:
- The layout of informational messages and the action log has been improved in the cdebconf configurator (Debian Configuration Management System). Issues with freezes occurring during switching to the recovery mode shell after a crash or selecting certain interface languages have been resolved.
- The list of mirrors has been updated.
- Packages brltty and espeakup for visually impaired individuals have been added to all images, including network installation images.
- The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.10.0-7.
- The ability to force the installation mode in low memory conditions in the system (lowmem=+0) has been introduced. The lowmem levels for arm64, armhf, mipsel, mips64el, and ppc64el architectures have been updated.
- In udev-udeb, the setup for symbolic links /dev/fd and /dev/std{in,out,err} has been provided.
- An mdio module for the Ethernet controller on Raspberry Pi 4 boards has been added.
