The second preliminary release of the Xfwl4 composite server, which uses the Wayland protocol, has been released. Xfwl4 is written in Rust using the Smithay library. The project does not overlap with the xfwm4 window manager codebase, but aims to implement all of xfwm4's existing functionality, including the ability to use existing xfconf settings and the configuration interface, while taking into account the specifics of using Wayland instead of X11. The project intends to enhance Xfwl4's functionality to the point where users will be able to switch between Xfwl4 and xfwm4 seamlessly.
Xfwl4's expanded features include a significant reworking of the session startup logic, implementation of the xdg-session-management Wayland protocol, and support for launching X11 applications using XWayland. Xfwl4 is built on top of the Smithay library, which provides implementations of nearly all official Wayland protocol extensions, as well as the wlroots and KDE protocols. Xfwl4's code is licensed under the GPLv3 (by comparison, the xfwm4 window manager is licensed under the GPLv2).
Changes in the second preview version focus on bug fixes, improved compatibility with xfwm4, and the addition of missing functionality. For example, support for vertical and horizontal window opening has been added, the xfce-foreign-toplevel-management-private-v1 protocol has been implemented, a dialog for confirming the forced quitting of frozen applications has been introduced, keyboard shortcuts for cycling between windows and applications have been added, and the ability to change window opacity by horizontally scrolling the mouse in the window title bar has been added.
