Igor Pavlov announced the significant release of the archiver 7-Zip 24.05. The project code is written in C++ and is distributed under the LGPL license. Ready-to-use builds are available for Windows and Linux for i686, x86-64, and ARM 32/64 architectures. Unfortunately, in most distributions, an outdated version of p7zip, which is over 7 years old, is still provided. This is likely due to the fact that the 7z code depends on the ASMC project, which is no longer used anywhere else.
In the new version:
- Support for ZSTD archives (file extension .zst) has been added.
- Support for ZIP, SquashFS, and RPM using the ZSTD compression method has been added.
- Support for the XXH64 hash algorithm, which is used in ZSTD, has been added.
- Support for RAR 7 archive format with a dictionary size of over 1GB has been added.
- Support for DMG archives using the XZ compression method (ULMO/LZMA) has been added.
- Support for NTFS images with a cluster size greater than 64 KB has been added.
- Support for MBR and GDP images with 4 KB sector sizes has been added.
- The extraction speed for archives has been optimized: rar, cab, wim, zip, gz.
- The hash calculation speed has been optimized: CRC-32, CRC-64, Blake2sp.
- A filter for binary files for the RISCV architecture has been added, allowing for increased compression rates.
- The extraction speed of LZMA and LZMA2 has increased by 20-60% in the ARM64 version for Windows.
- Bugs have been fixed.
