The lightweight live distribution AntiX 19.4 has been released, built on the Debian package base and aimed at installation on outdated hardware. This release is based on the Debian 10 (Buster) package base, but comes without the system manager systemd, using eudev instead of udev. For initialization, either runit or sysvinit can be used. The default user environment is formed using the IceWM window manager, but Fluxbox, JWM, and herbstluftwm are also available. File management tools available include Midnight Commander, SpaceFM, and ROX-Filer. The distribution works on systems with 256 MB of RAM. The size of the ISO images is 1.3 GB (full, includes LibreOffice), 728 MB (base), 415 MB (without graphics), and 176 MB (network installation). Builds are prepared for x86_64 and i386 architectures.
In the new release,
- Additional settings have been added to the installer. In frugal install mode (booting similar to LiveCD for resource savings), support for encrypted partitions has been added.
- The complete and basic builds now include the SeaMonkey browser. Firefox has been updated to version 78.10.0esr.
- mps-tube has been removed from the distribution; ytfzf has been added for downloading videos from YouTube using mpv/youtube-dl.
- Localization has been improved and updated.
- The Linux kernel has been updated to version 4.9.0-264.
- The LibreOffice office suite has been updated to version 7.0.4.
- The IceWM window manager has been updated to version 2.3.4 (previously version 1.8.3 was supplied).
- A set of firmware has been backported from Debian Sid.
- The size of the base image has been reduced to fit on a CD (the GUI iso-snapshot has been replaced with iso-snapshot-cli, and Package Installer, smtube, and virtualbox-guest have been removed).
