The release of AROS One 2.5 has been published, developing the AROS operating system distribution, which allows users to launch a desktop environment styled like AmigaOS on their systems. For x86 systems, an ISO image and a bootable environment for USB drives have been prepared. The AROS operating system has been in development since 1995 and is distributed under the AROS Public License, based on the Mozilla Public License 1.1.
The AROS project is compatible with AmigaOS 3.1 at the API level, providing the ability to run applications created for AmigaOS (after recompiling for AROS), offering a TCP/IP stack, a sound subsystem, and a toolkit for developing graphical applications. AROS also features a graphical user interface in the style of AmigaOS and develops additional functionality that expands the capabilities of AmigaOS. AROS One is a ready-to-run distribution for modern hardware, including a customized AROS operating system and
a set of various user applications.
Among the changes in the new version:
- A new C library has been proposed, synchronized with
the 64-bit AROS OS. - When running AROS on top of Linux, it introduces the ability to operate using WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), a layer for running Linux applications in Windows.
- The default mouse cursor image has been replaced.
- The functionality of the boot menu has been expanded and boot time has been reduced.
- The Wanderer file manager and desktop have added support for deleting files and directories using the Del key.
- A SMB2-Start script has been added to organize file sharing over the network.
- Updated versions of applications built for AROS include emulators of classic games ScummVM 1.9.1 and ResidualVM 0.3.1.1, the graphics library GLFW (Graphics Library Framework) 3.4, the AmiFox 0.6 browser, the Image2PDF 2.6 image converter, the ThemeList 1.0 theme selection interface, the LoView 2.024 image viewer, the WitchCleaner 3.20 system cleaning application, as well as various demos and games.
