The release of the web browser Pale Moon 31.2 has been published, diverging from the Firefox codebase to ensure higher efficiency, maintaining a classic interface, minimizing memory consumption, and providing additional customization options. Pale Moon builds are generated for Windows and Linux (x86 and x86_64). The project code is distributed under the MPLv2 (Mozilla Public License).
The project adheres to the classic interface organization, avoiding the transition to the integrated interface Australis introduced in Firefox 29, and provides extensive customization options. Notable removed components include DRM, Social API, WebRTC, PDF viewer, Crash Reporter, code for statistics collection, parental control tools, and accessibility features. Compared to Firefox, support for XUL technology is retained, along with the option to use both full-featured and lightweight themes.
In the new version:
- Support has been implemented for the white-space CSS property with the break-spaces value, which specifies that any sequence of spaces causing line overflow should be broken.
- The Intl.RelativeTimeFormat() function has been added for formatting time in text representation according to the peculiarities of various languages (for example, rtf = new Intl.RelativeTimeFormat('ru'); rtf.format(-15, 'minute') will output '15 minutes ago').
- Support for specifying the async mode when declaring generator methods has been added.
- Preliminary support for building on Apple devices with ARM-based M1 and M2 (Apple Silicon) processors has been provided.
- Support for building in Visual Studio 2022 has been added.
- Improved support for CSS 'sticky' elements in tables.
- The stack size limit has been raised to 2MB.
- The implementation of the toString function has been brought in line with the new JavaScript specifications.
- Many libraries included in the core distribution have been updated. The NSS library has been updated to version 3.52.8.
- Site-specific User-Agent header overrides have been updated. This includes resolving issues with loading Google fonts and websites like Citi Bank and MeWe through User-Agent overrides.
- A regression affecting the performance of Unix-like systems due to incorrect handling of threads has been fixed.
- The application of Content Security Policies (CSP) restrictions to images and documents transmitted in 'data:' blocks has been discontinued (previously, restrictions applied to all requests, which did not align with Chrome's behavior).
