The release of the Pale Moon 32.1 web browser has been announced, which forked from the Firefox codebase to ensure higher performance, preserve the classic interface, minimize memory consumption, and provide additional customization options. Pale Moon builds are available for Windows and Linux (x86_64). The project code is distributed under the MPLv2 (Mozilla Public License).
The project adheres to a classic interface organization, without transitioning to the integrated Australis and Photon interfaces in Firefox 29 and 57, and provides extensive customization capabilities. Removed components include DRM, Social API, WebRTC, PDF viewer, Crash Reporter, code for collecting statistics, parental control tools, and accessibility features. Compared to Firefox, the browser reintroduces support for extensions using XUL and maintains the ability to apply both full and lightweight themes.
In the new version:
- The support for the WebComponents technology set for creating custom HTML tags is enabled by default, including the specifications for Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, JavaScript Modules, and HTML Templates, which are used on platforms like GitHub. Currently, only the CustomElements and Shadow DOM APIs from the WebComponents set are implemented in Pale Moon.
- Builds for macOS (Intel and ARM) have been stabilized.
- The tail of the tabs' headers is darkened where the entire text cannot fit (instead of showing an ellipsis).
- The Promise implementations and async functions have been updated. The Promise.any() method has been implemented.
- The handling of objects with regular expressions has been improved, ensuring correct garbage collection.
- Issues with VP8 video playback have been resolved.
- The built-in emoji font has been updated.
- The CSS pseudo-classes ':is()' and ':where()' have been implemented.
- Complex selectors for the pseudo-class ':not()' have been implemented.
- The CSS property 'inset' has been implemented.
- The CSS function 'env()' has been implemented.
- Video playback is now supported with the RGB color model, rather than only with YUV. Full brightness range (0-255 levels) video processing has been ensured.
- The Web text-to-speech API is enabled by default.
- Versions of the NSPR 4.35 and NSS 3.79.4 libraries have been updated.
- Unused system settings for 'Tracking protection' have been removed, and the code has been cleaned up (Pale Moon uses its own counter-blocking system for tracking visits, and the 'Tracking protection' system from Firefox was not applied).
- The security of code generation in the JIT engine has been increased.
