Release of Pale Moon Browser 33.0.0

The release of the Pale Moon web browser 33.0.0 has been published, diverging from the Firefox codebase to ensure higher performance, maintain a classic interface, minimize memory consumption, and provide additional customization options. Builds of Pale Moon are available for Windows and Linux (x86_64). The project's code is distributed under the MPLv2 (Mozilla Public License).

The project adheres to a classic interface organization, without transitioning to the integrated Australis and Photon interfaces in Firefox 29 and 57, and provides extensive customization capabilities. Removed components include DRM, Social API, WebRTC, PDF viewer, Crash Reporter, code for collecting statistics, parental control tools, and accessibility features. Compared to Firefox, the browser reintroduces support for extensions using XUL and maintains the ability to apply both full and lightweight themes.

Key Changes:

  • A trimmed version of the Async Clipboard API (navigator.clipboard) has been added for asynchronous clipboard operations, allowing data to be written to the clipboard using the Promise mechanism (unlike other browsers, read operations are prohibited for privacy reasons).
  • Support for digital signatures based on SHA-2 hashes (SHA-256/SHA-512) has been implemented for handling OCSP (Online Certificate Status Protocol) responses.
  • A setting has been added (Preferences -> Content -> Media) to limit full-screen mode of the DOM to the current window instead of the entire screen.
  • A new settings tab has been added to the configurator (Preferences -> Privacy -> Tracking) to manage the activity of features that can be used for passive user identification, such as the PerformanceObserver interface and the Canvas element.
  • Support for the PromiseRejectionEvent has been added, which is utilized in some JavaScript libraries.
  • An accessible writable property 'HTMLInputElement.files' has been implemented for the element.
  • Experimental support for Mac PowerPC and Big Endian platforms has been added.
  • Build environment requirements have been raised: a compiler that supports the C++17 standard is now necessary for building.
