The release of Chrome OS 101 is now available, built on the Linux kernel, using the upstart system manager, ebuild/portage build tools, open components, and Chrome 101 web browser. The user environment of Chrome OS is limited to the web browser, with web applications replacing standard software; however, Chrome OS includes a fully functional multi-window interface, desktop, and taskbar. The Chrome OS 101 build is available for most current Chromebook models. The source code is distributed under the Apache 2.0 open license. Additionally, testing continues for Chrome OS Flex, a version of Chrome OS for use on ordinary computers. Enthusiasts are also creating unofficial builds for standard computers with x86, x86_64, and ARM processors.
Key changes in Chrome OS 101:
- A network-based recovery mode (NBR) has been implemented, allowing new versions of Chrome OS to be installed and firmware updated in case of system damage and boot failure without needing a local connection to another device. This mode is available for most Chrome OS devices released after April 20.
- The fwupd toolset is now used for downloading and installing firmware updates for peripheral devices, similar to its application in most Linux distributions. Instead of automatic installation of updates, a user interface is provided to allow updates to be performed at the user's discretion.
- The environment for running Linux applications (Crostini) has been updated to Debian 11 (Bullseye). Debian 11 is currently offered only for new Crostini installations, while existing users remain on Debian 10, but they will receive a prompt to upgrade their environment to the new version upon launch. The update can also be initiated through the configurator. To facilitate problem diagnosis, a log with information on the update progress is now saved in the Downloads directory.
- The camera app interface has been improved. The left toolbar now provides easier access to options and clearly shows which modes and features are currently enabled or inactive. In the settings tab, readability of parameters has been enhanced and searching has been simplified.
- The Cursive handwritten note-taking app offers a canvas lock switch, allowing users to control the availability of panning and zooming the canvas, for instance, to prevent accidental movements while working on a note. The canvas lock can be enabled through the menu and disabled via a button at the top.
