The release of CSMWrap 3.0 has been published, developing an EFI application for booting systems that only support outdated BIOS platforms in modern UEFI-based environments. CSMWrap recreates the BIOS environment on UEFI systems (class 3) by packaging a SeaBIOS build in the form of a CSM (Compatibility Support Module) module and running it as an external EFI application. The project code is written in C and is distributed under the LGPL-2.1 license.
The project provides 64-bit and 32-bit builds of the EFI application, which needs to be placed in the /EFI/BOOT/ directory on a FAT FS partition on the media with an operating system that can only boot in BIOS environments. The UEFI firmware recognizes such media and displays it among the boot devices. It is recommended to use MBR-formatted partition tables on the bootable device.
The CSMWrap 3.0 branch adds support for the csmwrap.ini configuration file, which can be placed in the same directory as the EFI executable to specify additional settings. It implements the possibility of specifying serial port parameters for debug output, the path to an alternative VGABIOS (instead of SeaVGABIOS), PCI addresses for the graphics card, flags to disable IOMMU, and suppressing output to the screen of CSMWrap operation information, displayed in addition to the banner and error messages.
