The release of project D7VK 1.1 has been announced, which advances the implementation of the Direct3D 6 and 7 graphics APIs proposed by Microsoft in 1998 and 1999. D7VK operates by translating calls to the Vulkan API and allows retro games tied to Direct3D 6 and 7 to run on Linux using Wine. The project's code is written in C++ and is distributed under the Zlib license. The backend code from the DXVK project has been used as a basis for development — D7VK converts Direct3D 6 and 7 API calls into Direct3D 9 calls, which are then translated into the Vulkan API. The developer does not intend to integrate D7VK into DXVK, as was done with the implementations of Direct3D 8 and Direct3D 9 over Vulkan.
Version 1.1 is noteworthy for adding experimental support for Direct3D 6 in addition to the previously developed support for Direct3D 7. There are no plans to add support for earlier APIs, as D3D6 and D3D7 are close enough to D3D9, while the rendering mechanism in D3D5 is significantly different from D3D9 and is problematic to translate into this API.
