The release of the D7VK project 1.12 has been published, which develops the implementation of graphical APIs Direct3D 3, 5, 6, and 7 proposed by Microsoft in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999. D7VK works by translating calls into the Vulkan API and allows retro games tied to Direct3D 3, 5, 6, and 7 to run on Linux using Wine. The project's code is written in C++ and distributed under the Zlib license. The backend code d3d9 from the DXVK project was used as a basis for development — D7VK converts Direct3D 3, 5, 6, and 7 API calls into Direct3D 9 calls, which are then translated into the Vulkan API. The developer does not intend to incorporate D7VK into DXVK, as was done with the implementations of Direct3D 8 and Direct3D 9 over Vulkan.
In the new release:
- A series of performance optimizations have been implemented, mainly concerning API code executed on the CPU. Performance metrics for D3D6 in the 3DMark 99 Max test increased from 70685 points in D7VK 1.2 to 75283 in D7VK 1.12, while D3D7 in the 3DMark 2000 v1.1 test rose from 45267 in D7VK 1.0 to 69566 in D7VK 1.12. In some cases, the introduced micro-optimizations significantly improved FPS on systems with weak CPUs; for example, in Unreal Tournament, FPS increased from 256 to 484, while GPU load decreased from 37% to 18%.
- The implementation of color key-based transparency has been simplified without the use of a full alpha channel.
- Color transformations during viewport clearing have been optimized for D3D6/5/3.
- To reduce the number of used handles, the allocation of texture and material descriptors is now done after the application requests them, instead of at the moment of texture or material creation.
- Transition to working on the DXVK 3.0.1 release has been completed.
- Fixes have been made to improve support for the games Matrox TechDemo 3D, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and The Sims: Complete Collection.
