The release of the D7VK project version 1.2 has been published, which develops the implementation of the Direct3D 5, 6, and 7 graphics APIs proposed by Microsoft in 1997, 1998, and 1999. D7VK works by translating calls to the Vulkan API and allows retro games tied to Direct3D 5, 6, and 7 to run on Linux using Wine. The project code is written in C++ and is distributed under the Zlib license. The D3D9 backend code from the DXVK project was used as a basis for development — D7VK transforms the Direct3D 5, 6, and 7 APIs into Direct3D 9 calls, which are then translated into the Vulkan API. The developer does not plan to seek to include D7VK into DXVK, as was done with the Direct3D 8 and 9 implementations over Vulkan.
Version 1.2 is notable for the addition of experimental support for Direct3D 5, in addition to the previously developed support for Direct3D 6 and 7.
The new version also expands support for Direct3D 6, reworks the logic of the DDraw wrapper, adds an IClassFactory implementation for DDraw, introduces an additional startup mode for Wine/Linux, improves reporting on D3D7 support, implements an alternative vertex processing method to enhance performance for the game 1NSANE, and improves compatibility with the 3DMark 99 Max test suite.
