Release of Display Server Mir 1.4

Published release of the display server Mir 1.4, developed by Canonical, continues to thrive despite the abandonment of the Unity shell and the Ubuntu edition for smartphones. Mir remains in demand in Canonical's projects and is now positioned as a solution for embedded devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). Mir can be used as a compositor for Wayland, allowing any applications that use Wayland (for example, those built with GTK3/4, Qt5, or SDL2) to run in environments based on Mir. Installation packages are prepared for Ubuntu 16.04/18.04/18.10/19.04 (PPA) and Fedora 29/30. The project's code is distributed is licensed under GPLv2.

In the new release, the support for the Layer Shell protocol in tools for launching Wayland applications in Mir-based shells has been improved. wlr-layer-shell (Layer Shell), proposed by the developers of the Sway desktop environment, and used in the process of porting the MATE shell to Wayland. The mirrun and mirbacklight utilities have been removed from the package. The MirAL (Mir Abstraction Layer) middleware, which can be used to avoid direct calls to the Mir server and abstract access to the ABI through the libmiral library, has added support for exclusive zones that restrict window placements to a specific area of the screen.

A first step has been taken to eliminate the specific mirclient API, which has been in a frozen state for a long time. Instead, it is recommended to use the Wayland protocol. In this new release, the mirclient API is disabled by default, but a build option "--enable-mirclient" is provided for re-enabling it. For selective activation, the environment variable MIR_SERVER_ENABLE_MIRCLIENT and the configuration file setting enable-mirclient are suggested. The full removal of the mirclient API is hindered by its continued use in UBports and Ubuntu Touch.
