Release of Display Server Mir 1.8

Introduced release of the display server Mir 1.8, whose development continues by Canonical, despite the abandonment of the Unity shell and the Ubuntu edition for smartphones. Mir remains in demand in Canonical's projects and is now positioned as a solution for embedded devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). Mir can be used as a compositor server for Wayland, allowing any applications utilizing Wayland (for example, those built with GTK3/4, Qt5, or SDL2) to run in Mir-based environments. Installation packages are prepared for Ubuntu 16.04-20.04 (PPA) and Fedora 30/31/32. The project's code is distributed is licensed under GPLv2.

The main changes in this release are related to the expansion of support for high pixel density (HiDPI) displays and improvements in portability:

  • With Mir operating using the Wayland protocol, proper scaling on HiDPI screens has been implemented. Individual scaling settings can be set for each output device, including fractional values.
  • In the component supporting the launch of X11 applications in Wayland-based environments (using Xwayland), the ability to change the scale for dummy output devices has been added, the ‘—display-config’ option has been proposed, and the X11 cursor has been disabled in the Mir window.
  • In the implementation of the ‘wayland’ platform, allowing Mir to launch as a client under the management of another Wayland compositor server, the ability to scale the output of Wayland clients has been added.
  • In the MirAL (Mir Abstraction Layer), which can be used to avoid direct interaction with the Mir server and abstract access to the ABI through the libmiral library, a state of ‘no active window’ has been implemented.
  • In the demonstration shell mir-shell, proper scaling of the background has been ensured, and support for running GNOME Terminal on all platforms has been added.
  • Some distribution-specific issues have been resolved, including problems when launching Mir in Fedora and Arch Linux.
  • For the mesa-kms platform, which enables Mir to operate over Mesa and KMS drivers (other platforms are mesa-x11, wayland, and eglstream-kms), support for scalable output has been added.
