The release of Display Server Mir 2.7 has been presented, which is still under development by Canonical, despite the cessation of the Unity shell and Ubuntu mobile edition. Mir remains in demand within Canonical's projects and is now positioned as a solution for embedded devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). Mir can be used as a composite server for Wayland, allowing any applications utilizing Wayland (for example, built with GTK3/4, Qt5, or SDL2) to run in Mir-based environments. Installation packages are prepared for Ubuntu 20.04, 21.10, and 22.04-test (PPA) and Fedora 33, 34, 35, and 36. The project code is released under the GPLv2 license.
The new version includes the MirOil library, providing a layer for transitioning to new versions of the Lomiri graphical environment, which continues the development of the Unity8 shell. An ‘idle-timeout’ option has been added to configure screen shutdown after a certain period of inactivity. Support for the zwp_text_input_manager_v2 protocol, essential for on-screen keyboards and Qt applications, has been included. Input focus management for the keyboard has been improved. The development has transitioned to using the C++20 standard.
