The release of the Mir 2.8 display server has been announced, with continued development by Canonical, despite the discontinuation of the Unity shell and Ubuntu editions for smartphones. Mir remains in demand in Canonical's projects and is now positioned as a solution for embedded devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). Mir can be used as a compositing server for Wayland, allowing any applications that utilize Wayland (for instance, those built with GTK3/4, Qt5, or SDL2) to run in Mir-based environments. Installation packages have been prepared for Ubuntu 20.04, 21.10, and 22.04 (PPA) and Fedora 33, 34, 35, and 36. The project's code is distributed under the GPLv2 license.
In the new version:
- Support has been added for the experimental wlr_screencopy_unstable_v1 protocol extension, enabling the creation of screenshot utility tools.
- Code generation with definitions for the Wayland protocol has been ensured during the build.
- The graphics platform code and API have been reworked for future support of heterogeneous and hybrid GPU environments.
- An option ‘—x11-window-title’ has been added to set the window title on the X11 platform.
- Building and testing of Mir on RISC-V architecture systems has been implemented.
- Build verification has been ensured in the experimental branches of Ubuntu 22.10, Fedora Rawhide, Debian Sid, and Alpine Edge.
