The release of 4MLinux 44.0 has been announced, a minimalist user distribution that is not a fork of other projects and uses a graphical environment based on JWM. 4MLinux can be used not only as a live environment for playing multimedia files and solving user tasks but also as a recovery system and a platform for running LAMP servers (Linux, Apache, MariaDB, and PHP). Three live images (x86_64) have been prepared for download: one with a graphical environment (1.3 GB), one with a selection of server system programs (1.3 GB), and a trimmed-down environment (14 MB).
In the new version:
- Updated package versions: Linux kernel 6.1.60, Mesa 23.1.4, LibreOffice 7.6.3, AbiWord 3.0.5, GIMP 2.10.34, Gnumeric 1.12.55, Firefox 119.0.1, Chrome 119.0.6045.123, Thunderbird 115.4.2, Audacious 4.3.1, VLC 3.0.20, SMPlayer 23.6.0, Wine 8.19.
- In the server build, Apache httpd has been updated to 2.4.58, MariaDB to 10.6.16, PHP to 5.6.40 and 8.1.25, Perl to 5.36.0, Python to 3.11.4, and Ruby to 3.2.2.
- Support for VA-API (Video Acceleration API) has been added for hardware acceleration of video encoding and decoding.
- Available for download are additional packages including the audio player QMMP, the video player Media Player Classic Qt, and the game Capitan Sevilla.
- Improved support for wireless networks and printers using SPL (Samsung Printer Language).
