The release of 4MLinux 51.0 is now available, a minimalist user distribution that is not a fork of other projects and utilizes a graphical environment based on the JWM window manager. 4MLinux can be used both as a live environment for playing multimedia files and solving user tasks, and as a recovery system and platform for launching mini-servers. A live image (x86_64, 2.1 GB) with a graphical environment and a stripped-down console build (x86_64, 16.2 MB) are prepared for download.
In the new version:
- Updated package versions: Mesa 25.3.1, BusyBox 1.37.0, PHP 8.4.14, Perl 5.42.0, Python 3.13.8, Ruby 3.4.7.
- Updated user applications: LibreOffice 26.2, AbiWord 3.0.7, GIMP 3.0.8, Gnumeric 1.12.60, Firefox 149.0, Chrome 146.0, Thunderbird 140.9, Audacious 4.5.1, VLC 3.0.23, SMPlayer 25.6.0.
- Included is the libayemu library for emulating AY/YM sound chips (e.g., AY-8912) used in ZX Spectrum and Atari computers.
- The bootable additions include the Midori browser and the console music player cmus.
- Several driver sets have been added: Mesa 25.3.1 (VAAPI and Vulkan for modern GPUs), Mesa 21.3.9 (VAAPI and VDPAU for older GPUs), and Intel VAAPI (for i965 and iHD). Fresh firmware updates for AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA devices have been added.
- Automated application of optimal settings depending on the hardware in use has been implemented.
