The release of the distribution "Alt Workstation K 10" has been published, provided with a graphical environment based on KDE Plasma. Boot images have been prepared for the x86_64 architecture (HTTP, Yandex mirror, Distrib Coffee, Infania Networks). The operating system is included in the Unified Register of Russian Programs and meets the requirements for transitioning to infrastructure running domestic OSs. The KDE-based build is the final update in the entire lineup of "Alt" distributions to the tenth branch of the platform. In December 2021, distributions "Alt Server", "Workstation", "Education", Simply Linux, and "Virtualization Server" were released.
An important feature is the ability to boot from the "Alt Workstation K" disk in Live mode. Like other operating systems from the "Alt" family, the distribution is equipped with the Alterator graphical interface for system configuration, allowing management of users and groups, viewing system logs, adding printers, configuring the network, and much more. The system successfully operates within an Active Directory domain. Support for applying group policies is implemented using server Samba 4.14. "Alt Workstation K 10" includes all the tools necessary for office tasks—web browser, office suite for word processing and spreadsheets, as well as audio and video players and editors.
Main innovations and features:
- The distribution gathers packages of current versions for the system environment based on the Linux kernel 5.15, Glibc 2.32, compiler set GCC 10.3, systemd 249.9.
- Support for the 12th generation Intel Alder Lake processors is provided.
- Support for seamless system boot has been added.
- The ability to take a screenshot during system installation has appeared.
- Additional drivers for OKI printers, Brother, and Epson scanners have been added.
- Included is the Linphone program—a cross-platform SIP IP telephony client with open source, distributed under the GNU GPL license. The Linphone program is designed for organizing audio and video calls, as well as exchanging text messages via the Internet.
- The system now supports Snap applications for desktops, cloud, and the Internet of Things, along with the ability to install them from the Snap Store catalog. The Flathub repository is enabled by default for installing Flatpak packages.
- A safe system update mode has been implemented, where the system will update packages during reboot.
- The plasma5-discover-packagekit has replaced the apt-indicator.
- A Chromium browser has been assembled for online work, supporting the Chromium-gost 97 encryption algorithm, along with the Thunderbird 91 email client.
- Network settings are managed by NetworkManager 1.32.
- Compatibility has been ensured with electronic digital signature (EDS) tools such as RUTOKEN, JaCarta, and ISBC. EDS key management is possible right out of the box, including support for two-factor authentication with tokens. Russian root encryption certificates have also been added to the system.
- The office suite now includes LibreOffice 7 for editing texts, spreadsheets, and presentations, the Okular 21.12 document viewer, and the integrated QStarDict 1.3 dictionary. Many will appreciate the built-in text recognition utility, gImageReader 3.3. Navigation is facilitated by the Dolphin 21 file manager. The classic set of applications for video and audio files, complex graphics, and animations now defaults to using the Krita 5.0 graphics editor, replacing GIMP.
- The distribution supports 3D hardware acceleration and OpenCL tools with proprietary NVIDIA graphics card drivers.
- On UEFI firmware systems, the installer startup has been improved; particular attention has been paid to problematic UEFI specifications. The X11 graphical subsystem has eliminated freezing when the hostname was changed.
The downloaded version can be freely used by individuals, including sole proprietors. Commercial and governmental organizations can download and test the distribution. To operate "Alt Server Virtualization" continuously within corporate infrastructure, legal entities must purchase licenses or enter into written licensing agreements.
Users of the Alt distributions based on the Ninth platform (p9) can upgrade the system from the p10 branch of the Sisyphus repository. New corporate users have the opportunity to obtain trial versions, while private users are traditionally offered the option to download the required version of the Alt OS for free from the "BASALT SPO" website or from the new download site getalt.ru. Developers are encouraged to participate in improving the Sisyphus repository.
