The release of the Deepin 20.8 distribution has been published, based on the Debian 10 package base, but developing its own Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE) and about 40 custom applications, including the music player DMusic, video player DMovie, messaging system DTalk, installer, and Deepin Software Center. The project is founded by a group of developers from China but has transformed into an international project. The distribution supports the Russian language. All developments are distributed under the GPLv3 license. The size of the bootable ISO image is 4 GB (amd64).
Desktop components and applications are developed using C/C++ (Qt5) and Go. A key feature of the Deepin desktop is the panel, which supports several operating modes. In the classic mode, there is a more explicit separation of open windows and suggested applications to launch, and the system tray area is displayed. The efficient mode somewhat resembles Unity, mixing indicators of running programs, favorite applications, and control applets (volume/brightness settings, connected drives, clock, network status, etc.). The program launcher interface is fullscreen and provides two modes — viewing favorite applications and navigating through the catalog of installed programs.
Key innovations:
- A new application called 'Deepin Home' has been added, which gathers links to useful information resources about the distribution, such as discussion forums, wiki, GitHub, news, social media, and documentation. In the future, it is planned to provide the ability to send wishes, feedback, and problem reports.
- In the application installation manager, the opening of Wine applications has been accelerated after installation due to extraction during loading. Visual effects on the 'Updates' and 'Manage' pages have been optimized. The ability to copy and paste comments on the program information page has been provided. Display has been optimized when reducing the window to its minimum size.
- In the file manager, the option to save files to disk as images has been added, context menu buttons for renaming and formatting external drives have been implemented, and an interface for selecting images for the screensaver has been realized.
- The Qt library has been updated to version 5.15.6, and the Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.15.77.
- New driver packages nvidia-driver-510, nvidia-graphics-drivers-470, and nvidia-graphics-drivers-390 have been added.
