The release of LibreELEC 10.0 has been announced, which develops a fork of the distribution for creating home theaters, OpenELEC. The user interface is based on the Kodi media center. Images for booting from USB drives or SD cards (32- and 64-bit x86, Raspberry Pi 4, and various devices on Rockchip and Amlogic chips) have been prepared.
With LibreELEC, you can turn any computer into a media center, operating it as easily as a DVD player or a set-top box. The main principle of the distribution is 'everything just works'; to obtain a fully operational environment, simply load LibreELEC from a flash drive. Users do not need to worry about keeping the system up to date — the distribution uses an automatic download and installation system for updates, activated when connected to the global network. There is an option to expand the functionality of the distribution through an extension system installed from a separate repository developed by the project creators.
In the new release, the included media center Kodi has been updated to version 19.1. Support for Raspberry Pi 0 and 1 boards has been discontinued. Due to unfinished work on rewriting graphic drivers, builds for Raspberry Pi 2 and 3 have not been formed. The main focus is on supporting the Raspberry Pi 4 board, which utilizes hardware decoding for H.264 and H.265 video, provides 4kp30 video output through HDMI, ensures HDR support, and includes the ability to pass through Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD audio.
It is worth noting that LibreELEC was created as a result of a conflict between the maintainer of OpenELEC and a large group of developers. The distribution does not use the package base of other distributions and relies on its own developments. In addition to the standard capabilities of Kodi, the distribution provides a number of additional features aimed at simplifying operation.
