The release of EndeavourOS 22.1 "Atlantis" has been published, succeeding the Antergos distribution, which was discontinued in May 2019 due to a lack of available time from the remaining maintainers to keep the project at a proper level. The installation image size is 1.8 GB (x86_64, a separate build for ARM is being developed).
Endeavour OS allows users to install Arch Linux with the required desktop environment without unnecessary complications, in the form as envisioned by the developers of the chosen desktop, without additional pre-installed programs. The distribution offers a simple installer for setting up the base Arch Linux environment with Xfce as the default desktop and the option to install one of the standard desktop environments from the repository, including Mate, LXQt, Cinnamon, KDE Plasma, GNOME, Budgie, as well as tiling window managers like i3, BSPWM, and Sway. Work is underway to add support for the Qtile and Openbox window managers, and the UKUI, LXDE, and Deepin desktop environments. Additionally, one of the project developers is working on a custom window manager, Worm.
In the new release:
- A selection of display managers for installation is provided depending on the chosen window manager. In addition to the previously offered default combo of LightDM + Slickgreeter, Lxdm, ly, and GDM can now also be selected.
- In the Calamares installer, the desktop environment selection interface is separated from the package selection stage.
- In the Live build and installations with Xfce, the Qogir icon and cursor set is used instead of the previously offered Arc set.
- A button for customized installation has been added, allowing users to manually enable additional installer modules.
- The project-developed modules for the Calamares installer — Pacstrap and Cleaner — have been rewritten.
- A button for managing the display of the installation log has been added to the installer, as well as an indicator to assess the installation status in online mode.
- Bluetooth is enabled by default in the Live environment, but remains inactive by default after installation.
- When choosing the Btrfs file system during installation, data compression is now applied to files placed during installation (previously, compression was enabled after installation).
- The dynamic firewall firewalld is enabled, which runs as a background process, allowing dynamic changes to packet filtering rules through DBus without the need to restart the filtering rules and without breaking established connections.
- A new graphical application, EOS-quickstart, has been added, offering an interface to install the most popular programs not included in the base package.
- The EOS-packagelist utility has been added, replacing the EndeavourOS-packages-lists interface used to access the lists of packages utilized in the installer.
- The Nvidia-inst utility has been added to simplify the installation of proprietary NVIDIA drivers.
- Support for mirror ranking has been added to the EndeavourOS-mirrorlist utility for selecting the nearest mirror.
- A window manager called Worm has been added to the distribution, developed by one of the project participants. The goal for Worm's development was to create a lightweight window manager that works well with both floating windows and tiled window layouts, providing in both modes control buttons for minimizing, maximizing, and closing the window. Worm supports the EWMH and ICCCM specifications, is written in Nim, and can only work using the X11 protocol (there are no plans for Wayland support in the near future).
