The release of EndeavourOS 24.04 has been announced, succeeding the Antergos distribution, which was discontinued in May 2019 due to a lack of free time from the remaining maintainers to support the project adequately. The installation image size is 2.7 GB (x86_64).
EndeavourOS allows users to install Arch Linux without unnecessary complexities, providing the desktop environment as intended in its standard configuration offered by the developers of the selected desktop, without additional pre-installed programs. The distribution offers a simple installer to set up a basic Arch Linux environment with KDE desktop by default, with the option to install one of the standard desktop environments from the repository based on Mate, LXQt, Cinnamon, Xfce, GNOME, Budgie, as well as tiling window managers i3, BSPWM, and Sway. Work is ongoing to add support for window managers Qtile and Openbox, as well as desktops UKUI, LXDE, and Deepin. One of the project's developers is also developing a custom window manager called Worm.
In the new version:
- The installer and Live environment have added support for the KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment. In the Live environment, X11 is used to launch KDE, while Wayland is used by default for desktop installations, with the option to launch using X11 left available.
- The installer has been updated to Calamares 3.3.5.
- Updated versions include Linux kernel 6.8.7, Firefox 125.0.1, Mesa 24.0.5, NVIDIA drivers 550.76, and Xorg-server 21.1.13.
- Builds for ARM platforms have been discontinued.
- For systems with NVIDIA graphics cards, regular proprietary NVIDIA driver packages are now used instead of the Nvidia-dkms package.
- The 'replace partition' option now properly ensures the creation of the EFI partition.
- The Live image has reinstated the Gparted disk partition editor, in addition to the previously used KDE application partitionmanager, which lacks some sought-after features.
- In the Welcome updater and eos-bash-shared packages, GNOME Terminal is now used by default in GNOME and xterm in other environments.
- The notification application for available updates has been removed from the base package.
