The release of KaOS 2022.02 has been announced, a distribution based on a continuous update model aimed at providing a desktop environment based on the latest KDE releases and Qt applications. Notable distribution-specific design features include a vertical panel on the right side of the screen. The distribution develops with a nod to Arch Linux but supports its own independent repository containing over 1500 packages and offers a range of its own graphical utilities. The default file system is XFS. Builds are published for x86_64 systems (3 GB).
In the new release:
- By default, a KDE session based on the Wayland protocol is used.
- Desktop components have been updated to KDE Plasma 5.24, KDE Frameworks 5.91.0, KDE Gear 21.12.2, and Qt 6.2.3 (there is also an option for Qt 5.15.3, accompanied by the KDE project). A new interface for monitor configuration has been proposed, the process of moving panels to different parts of the screen has been simplified, and a new overview mode for viewing content is included. virtual desktops and evaluating search results in KRunner.
- Due to issues with Wayland support, the media player SMplayer has been replaced with Haruna, which is also a front-end for MPV. Additional features include integration with yt-dlp for downloading videos from YouTube.
- As the office suite, LibreOffice has been chosen over Calligra by default, with a rendering backend based on Qt5/kf5.
- The Calamares installer has implemented warning outputs for conflicts when partitioning disk drives.
- A new calendar-scheduler Kalendar has been included, providing tools for task and event management and supporting integration with external calendars based on Nextcloud, Google Calendar, Outlook, and Caldav.
- Software versions have been updated, including Glibc 2.33, GCC 11.2, Perl 5.34.0, PHP 8.1.2, GStreamer 1.20.0, Linux kernel 5.15.23, Systemd 250.3, Curl 7.81.0, Mesa 21.3.6, Wayland 1.20.0, Sudo 1.9.9, and Openldap 2.6.1.
