The release of KaOS 2022.06 has been introduced, a distribution with a continuous update model aimed at providing a desktop based on fresh KDE releases and Qt-based applications. Noteworthy design features specific to the distribution include the placement of a vertical panel on the right side of the screen. The distribution is developed with reference to Arch Linux but maintains its own independent repository, comprising over 1500 packages, and offers a range of custom graphical utilities. The default file system used is XFS. Builds are published for x86_64 systems (2.9 GB).
In the new release:
- Desktop components have been updated to KDE Plasma 5.25, KDE Frameworks 5.95, KDE Gear 22.04.2, and Qt 5.15.5 with patches from the KDE project (Qt 6.3.1 is also included).
- A virtual keyboard has been integrated into the login and lock screens.
- Package versions have been updated, including Glibc 2.35, GCC 11.3.0, Binutils 2.38, DBus 1.14.0, Systemd 250.7, and Nettle 3.8. The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.17.15.
- The Calamares installer has been updated to branch 3.3, which improves installation on encrypted partitions. During package installation, there is an option to view a slideshow overview of the distribution or to view the installation log.
- For managing wireless connections, the IWD background process has been employed instead of wpa_supplicant.
