Release of Lakka 3.4 distribution and RetroArch 1.9.9 console emulator

The release of the Lakka 3.4 distribution has been published, which allows computers, TV boxes, or single-board computers to be turned into a full-fledged gaming console for running retro games. The project is a modification of the LibreELEC distribution, originally designed for creating home theaters. Lakka builds are available for i386, x86_64 platforms (Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD GPUs), Raspberry Pi 1-4, Orange Pi, Cubieboard, Cubieboard2, Cubietruck, Banana Pi, Hummingboard, Cubox-i, Odroid C1/C1+/XU3/XU4, etc. To install, simply write the distribution to an SD card or USB drive, connect a gamepad, and boot the system.

At the same time, a new release of the game console emulator RetroArch 1.9.9 has been presented, which forms the basis of the Lakka distribution. RetroArch provides emulation of a wide range of devices and supports features such as multiplayer gaming, save states, image quality enhancement of old games using shaders, rewinding gameplay, hot-plugging gamepads, and video streaming. Among the emulated consoles are: Atari 2600/7800/Jaguar/Lynx, Game Boy, Mega Drive, NES, Nintendo 64/DS, PCEngine, PSP, Sega 32X/CD, SuperNES, etc. Gamepads from existing gaming consoles, including PlayStation 3, DualShock 3, 8bitdo, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox 360, are supported.

In the new release of RetroArch:

  • Support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) has been implemented, currently limited to drivers using Direct3D 11/12. Support for HDR in Vulkan, Metal, and OpenGL is planned for a later release.
  • In the port for Nintendo 3DS consoles, support for displaying the interactive menu on the lower touchscreen area has been added.
  • Extended search support has been implemented in the "Cheats" menu.
  • On platforms that support ARM NEON instructions, optimizations have been implemented to accelerate audio processing and conversion.
  • Support for AMD FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) technology has been added to reduce image quality loss during scaling for high-resolution screens. AMD FSR can be used with drivers for the Direct3D10/11/12, OpenGL Core, Metal, and Vulkan graphics APIs.

Issues in the Play! emulator (Sony PlayStation 2) have been resolved. The PPSSPP emulator (Sony PlayStation Portable) now supports the Vulkan graphics API.
