The release of the Lightweight Wayland Desktop Environment (LWDE) distribution is now available, providing a pre-configured and ready-to-use desktop based on the Labwc compositing server. The distribution is built on the Ubuntu 24.04 package base using its own repository. The project may be useful for enthusiasts looking to create their own environment to transition from LXDE to environments utilizing Wayland. A build for the amd64 architecture (1.1 GB) is prepared for download.
The environment of the distribution is based on GTK3, a compositing server Labwc (Lab Wayland Compositor) with features reminiscent of the Openbox window manager, Sfwbar panel, and spacefm file manager. The distribution includes a minimal number of packages - recommended applications are offered for installation during the process using the Calamares installer.
Features of the assembly:
- Suitable for resource-constrained hardware (consumes 213 MB of RAM after startup)
- A patched Labwc is used with a window switcher that supports previews.
- Additional Sfwbar widgets: network monitoring, temperature, keyboard layout.
- Thanks to the built-in Sfwbar widgets for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and sound settings, it has been possible to eliminate heavy components such as NetworkManager, Blueman, and Pavucontrol. Configuration is done through the corresponding indicators in Sfwbar.
- The spacefm file manager has been enhanced with plugins that implement a trash can and an interface for mounting without using gvfs.
- Missing GUI elements are written in bash + Yad or Gtkdialog. Most elements are localized using gettext.
