Nearly three years after the last major release, the Linux distribution Mageia 10 has been released, developed by an independent community of enthusiasts building a fork of the Mandriva project. Available for download are 32-bit and 64-bit installation images (5.6 GB) and a set of Live images (4.5-5.1 GB) based on GNOME, KDE, and Xfce.
Key Improvements:
- The requirements for 32-bit systems have been increased, now necessitating a CPU that supports SSE2 instructions. The architecture name for 32-bit ISO images has been changed from i586 to i686.
- For the desktop wallpapers, the JPG format has been replaced with JXL. The resolution has been increased to 3840×2160, but thanks to more efficient compression, disk space consumption has remained at the same level.
- The installer now requests the time zone at the start of the installation, adds support for wireless connections, and improves the recovery mode of previously installed systems.
- In the Live images with GNOME and KDE Plasma, sessions based on Wayland are offered by default. Options for falling back to X11 and using proprietary drivers have been implemented. Preliminary support for DisplayLink has been added, requiring the installation of the displaylink-native-evdi package. The capabilities of the draklive2 interface have been extended, simplifying the setup of localization, time zones, services, and firewall configuration, and a summary page with general information has been added.
- Through the RPM-MD repositories (RPM MetaData), metadata for AppStream is provided, which is used in the GNOME Software and Plasma Discover application managers for searching and managing applications.
- In the Mageia Control Center, the sound configuration tool draksound has simplified the switching between audio. servers PulseAudio and PipeWire (with PulseAudio being used by default). The parental control functionality (drakguard), which required redesign, has been removed.
- The graphical interfaces for ISO image writing tools (isodumper), package management (dnfdragora), and firewall configuration (manafirewall) have been revamped based on python-manatools. Python-manatools provides a wrapper for creating universal interfaces that can be rendered in graphical mode using Qt6 and GTK4, and in text mode using ncurses.
- A package 'remove-old-kernels' has been added with tools to remove old kernels from the system, keeping only the last three kernel package updates. Cleanup runs automatically once a week or can be triggered through the 'Tools' -> 'System tools' menu.
- The DHCP client 'dhcp-client' has been replaced with 'dhcpcd', and the memory testing tool 'PCMemTest' has been replaced with 'Memtest86+'.
- The note-taking application 'Knotes' has been replaced with 'Marknote'. The voice input and command recognition package 'NoComprendo' has been transitioned to libraries and models from the Vosk project.
- Included in the set are browsers for the Gemini protocol: 'Lagrange' (SDL), 'Kristall' (Qt), 'Offpunk' (CLI).
- The supply of the 'Chromium' package has been discontinued due to high maintenance costs. It is recommended to use the package in flatpak format or the official RPM package of Chrome from Google.
- Access to the 'dmesg' utility is now restricted to administrators only.
- Package versions have been updated, including Linux kernel 6.18, RPM 4.20.1, DNF 5.4 (as an alternative to urpmi), Docker 29.1.3, GRUB 2.12, Glibc 2.42, GCC 15.2, GDB 16.3, LLVM 20.1, Firebird 5.0.3.
