The release of the lightweight distribution MX Linux 21 has taken place, created as a result of the collaboration between the communities formed around the antiX and MEPIS projects. The release is based on a Debian package base with enhancements from the antiX project and packages from its own repository. The distribution uses the sysVinit initialization system and its own tools for system configuration and deployment. Both 32-bit and 64-bit builds are available for download, sized at 1.9 GB (x86_64, i386) with the Xfce desktop, as well as 64-bit builds featuring the KDE desktop.
In the new release:
- The transition to the Debian 11 package base has been completed. The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.10. Application versions have been updated, including the use of Xfce 4.16, KDE Plasma 5.20, and Fluxbox 1.3.7.
- The installer has an updated interface for selecting the partition for installation. Support for LVM has been implemented if an LVM volume already exists.
- The boot menu has been updated in Live mode for systems with UEFI. You can now select boot options from the boot menu and submenus, instead of using the previous console menu. An option "rollback" has been added to the menu for reverting changes.
- By default, a user password prompt is implemented for performing administrative tasks via sudo. This behavior can be changed in the 'MX Tweak' / 'Other' tab.
- The MX-Comfort theme has been proposed, which includes a dark mode and a mode with thick window borders.
- By default, the installation of Mesa drivers for the Vulkan graphics API is ensured.
- Improved support for wireless cards based on Realtek chips.
- A number of small configuration changes, especially in the panel with the new default set of plugins.
