The release of the lightweight distribution MX Linux 23.5 has been published, created as a result of the collaboration of communities formed around the antiX and MEPIS projects. The release is based on the Debian package base with enhancements from the antiX project and packages from its own repository. The distribution uses the sysVinit initialization system and custom tools for system configuration and deployment. Both 32-bit and 64-bit builds (x86_64, i386) with an Xfce desktop (2.4 GB) are available for download, as well as 64-bit builds with a KDE desktop (2.7 GB) and builds (1.8 GB) with the Fluxbox window manager.
In the new release:
- The Xfce desktop environment has been updated to version 4.20.
- Synchronization with the Debian package base 12.9 has been accomplished. Application versions have been updated. As in previous releases, the sysVinit initialization system continues to be used by default, with systemd available as an option.
- The base package with the Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.1.123. Additionally, builds with extended hardware support (AHS) have been prepared, which come with Xfce and kernel 6.12.8 with patches from the liquorix project.
- The MX Raspberry Pi Respin (RPI) build for Raspberry Pi boards has been updated, shipped with Xfce.
- In the graphical interface for the MX Packageinstaller, screenshots available on screenshots.debian.net are now displayed, along with improved presentation of package versions from third-party repositories.
- A warning has been added for attempts to enable persistent storage when booting from read-only media.
- Additional fallback modes have been added to the installer.
