The release of the lightweight MX Linux 25 distribution has been published, created through the collaborative efforts of the communities formed around the antiX and MEPIS projects. The release is based on the Debian package base with enhancements from the antiX project and packages from its own repository. The distribution uses the sysVinit initialization system and its own tools for configuring and deploying the system. 64-bit builds (x86_64) with the Xfce desktop (2.8 GB) are available for download, along with builds with the KDE desktop (3.3 GB) and builds (2.2 GB) with the Fluxbox window manager.
In the new release:
- The transition to the Debian 13 package base has been made. Application versions have been updated.
- The delivery of combined ISO images, which included both the systemd and sysVinit initialization systems, has been discontinued. In MX Linux 25, builds with systemd and sysVinit are separated and presented as individual ISO images. System environment options with sysVinit are only published for builds with Xfce and Fluxbox (the option to use sysVinit has been discontinued for KDE builds). This separation was made due to the impossibility of using systemd-shim packages developed for MX Linux with the kernel from Debian. Components of the antiX live system have been modified for better compatibility with systemd.
- Following Debian, the formation of 32-bit builds has been discontinued.
- The base package with the Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.12. Separate builds with extended hardware support (AHS) have been prepared, which come with Xfce and kernel 6.16 with patches from the liquorix project.
- The Xfce desktop environment continues to be delivered in version 4.20. Among the changes in the Xfce build are the optimization of settings and the replacement of file-roller with the engrampa archive manager.
- The version of Fluxbox 1.3.7 has been updated. In the Fluxbox build, the panel, application menu, and application finder interface (appfinder) settings have been redesigned. The Audacious music player has replaced Deadbeef.
- The version of KDE Plasma 6.3.6 has been updated. By default, a Wayland-based session is used in KDE, but the option to launch an X11-based session has been preserved. Qimgv has replaced gwenview as the image viewer.
- The MX GUI graphical utilities have been transitioned to the Qt 6 framework.
- The apt-notifier utility, used for system updates, has been replaced with the mx-updater interface, which supports the nala package manager in addition to apt (an extension of libapt-pkg).
- The installer has added initial support for booting in UEFI Secure Boot mode and has implemented the ability to replace existing Linux installations in place (without recreating partitions and retaining the contents of the /home directory). An option for storing swap in zram has been added.
- The MX Cleanup utility has added support for removing unused dkms drivers for Wi-Fi, as well as removing mx-manuals and mx-faqs packages for languages other than the system language.
