The release of the Live distribution NomadBSD 131R-20221130 is available, representing a version of FreeBSD adapted for use as a portable desktop bootable from a USB drive. The graphical environment is based on the Openbox window manager. DSBMD is used for mounting drives (support for CD9660, FAT, HFS+, NTFS, Ext2/3/4 is included). The size of the boot image is 2 GB (x86_64, i386).
In the new release:
- The base environment has been updated to FreeBSD 13.1.
- A new utility called nomadbsd-update has been added, designed for updating components of NomadBSD.
- Builds for the x86_64 architecture are divided into two boot images, differing by the use of UFS and ZFS file systems. The image for the i386 architecture is provided only in the UFS variant.
- UFS-based images have the Soft Updates journaling mechanism enabled by default, which helps simplify and speed up file system recovery after an unexpected shutdown.
- Automatic detection of graphics drivers has been improved. Support for VIA/Openchrome drivers has been added. For NVIDIA GPUs not supported by the proprietary driver, the nv driver is utilized.
- Support for keyboard layout switching has been enhanced. IBus is used to facilitate input.
- The rc script used for loading acpi modules has been improved.
- The display manager SLiM has been replaced with SDDM.
- Opera and Microsoft Edge have been added to the list of programs available for launching through Linuxulator.
- To reduce the size of the boot image, the LibreOffice office suite and several multimedia applications have been removed from the base distribution.
- The FreeBSD kernel has been built with an additional patch to protect certain laptops from hanging during the hwpstate_intel driver loading.
