Release of the OmniOS CE r151058 distribution, built on OpenSolaris technologies

The release of OmniOS Community Edition r151058 has been published, based on the developments of the Illumos project, which continues to enhance the kernel, network stack, file systems, drivers, libraries, and a core set of system utilities from OpenSolaris. OmniOS is notable for providing support for hypervisors bhyve and KVM, the virtual network stack Crossbow, the ZFS file system, and tools for launching lightweight Linux containers. The distribution can be used to build scalable web systems, virtualization, and storage systems.

Among the changes in the new release:

  • New frameworks have been proposed to support GPIO, I2C, and SMBus interfaces — drivers i2cnex and kgpio have been added to the kernel, along with user space libraries libi2c.so.1 and libxpio.so.1, as well as utilities i2cadm and gpioadm. Based on the new frameworks, drivers for the following devices have been implemented:
    • Intel SMBus (pchsmbus, ismt)
    • LTC4305/6 I2C Mux and GPIO
    • PCA954x I2C multiplexers
    • PCA953x I2C GPIO
    • AT24C I2C EEPROMs
    • DDR4 and DDR5 I2C SPD EEPROM
    • Temperature sensors TS511x DDR5, LM75 I2C, and TMP43x I2C.
  • A new driver stack for EEPROM devices has been added.
  • Support for AMD Phoenix 2 and Intel Alder Lake-N processors has been added.
  • Optimization for processing IPv6 traffic (fast path) has been included, allowing for increased throughput by bypassing DLS (Data Link Services) for packet transmission.
  • The pcieadm utility has been updated to support decoding DOE (Data Object Exchange) parameters and vendor-specific Virtio capabilities.
  • The nvmeadm utility has been enhanced to support the NVMe 2.1 specification, as well as to provide options for executing commands and displaying log formats specific to particular vendors, such as those used in Sandisk devices.
  • The cp and mv utilities have been updated to include the ‘-n’ option to prevent overwriting existing files. The ln utility now has an ‘-i’ option to prompt the user for confirmation before overwriting.
  • Support for creating and verifying digital signatures using the AES-GMAC algorithm has been added. Support for GMAC has also been incorporated into the SMB 3.1.1 protocol implementation.
  • Improvements have been made in smbd for connecting to SMB Active Directory. The behavior of SMB2 asynchronous response processing has been brought closer to that of Windows servers.
  • The ‘zfs change-key’ command has added the ‘-o user:prop=value’ option, allowing user properties to be updated simultaneously with key changes to avoid desynchronization.
  • The Bhyve hypervisor has added support for hybrid virtio devices, which simultaneously provide both the legacy and modern (1.0+) virtio interfaces. The viona virtual network card driver now supports multi-queue virtio-net and allows for differing queue sizes for sending and receiving data. The virtio-scsi device has been included.
  • In isolated environments (LX zone), emulation of /proc/self/coredump_filter has been implemented.
  • The scsi_vhci now supports configuring load balancing policies tied to individual logical devices.
  • Components of the user environment have been rebuilt using GCC 15.
  • The kernel linker has implemented support for loading larger kernel modules.
  • The pcre2 library (Perl-compatible Regular Expressions) is now built with JIT by default.
  • Updated software versions include GCC 15.2.0, SQLite 3.51.3, Git 2.53.0, OpenSSL 3.6.2, OpenSSH 10.3.1, Python 3.13.12, Bash 5.3.3.
