The release of the free distribution OpenIndiana 2024.04 has been announced, succeeding the binary distribution OpenSolaris, the development of which was halted by Oracle. OpenIndiana offers users a working environment built on a fresh slice of the Illumos project codebase. The development of OpenSolaris technologies continues under the Illumos project, which focuses on the kernel, network stack, file systems, drivers, as well as a core set of user system utilities and libraries. Three types of ISO images have been created for download: a server edition with console applications (970 MB), a minimal build (470 MB), and a build with the MATE graphical environment (1.9 GB).
Key changes in OpenIndiana 2024.04:
- Approximately 1230 packages have been updated, including about 900 packages related to the Python language and 200 related to Perl.
- The MATE user environment has been updated to version 1.28 (officially unannounced by the MATE project). Fixes aimed at improving stability have been ported to the basic MATE libraries from other distributions.
- Versions of LibreOffice 24.2, PulseAudio 17, Alpine 2.26, Firefox 125, Thunderbird 125 (test beta builds, with the next stable release of Thunderbird expected in the summer) have been updated.
- LLVM/Clang 18, Node.js 22, and golang 1.22 have been updated. Many packages have been compiled using GCC 13.
- The basic distribution now includes the fail2ban package for protection against flooding and password guessing attempts.
- The HPN SSH (High-Performance SSH) package has been prepared, which includes a version of OpenSSH with patches that eliminate bottlenecks affecting network data transfer performance.
- Packages that previously depended on libjpeg6 have been migrated to the libjpeg8-turbo library, which is used by default in the distribution.
- The zstd algorithm has been used for compressing boot images.
